Students at Orion High School have the opportunity to take CTE classes all four years to help prepare them for college and the world of work. Our departmental goals can be summed up through our mission statement stated below. To provide an environment for students to acquire academic, technological, and leadership skills that will empower them to become productive citizens who will value life-long learning and who can meet the high-tech, specialized demands of the 21st Century workplace. What does it mean to be part of CTE? Career and Technical Education (CTE) gives high school students, the chance to get a head start on preparing for college and careers. In CTE programs you will learn how core school subjects like math, science and writing are used in real-life. As a CTE student you have the opportunity to participate in hands-on training in your chosen program and gain real world experience through job shadows and internships. Many programs offer you the opportunity to earn college dual-credit, college articulated credit, and industry certifications which will help you on your way to either college or a career. Why take a Career and Technical Education (CTE) Course? Career Technical Education (CTE) is helping our nation meet the very real and immediate challenges of economic development, student achievement and global competitiveness. FACT: The average high school graduation rate for students concentrating in CTE programs is 90.18 percent compared to an average national freshman graduation rate of 74.9 percent. (1) FACT: Seventy percent of students concentrating in CTE areas stayed in postsecondary education or transferred to a four-year degree program, compared to an average state target of 58 percent. (2) FACT: Experts project 47 million job openings in the decade ending 2018. About one-third will require an associate’s degree or certificate, and nearly all will require real-world skills that can be mastered through CTE.
